One day my husband was out looking for Deer Antlers and he came across this tiny little animal. He picked it up and realized he was holding a baby porcupine! It was obvious that this tiny creature had no hope of survival so he decided to bring it home. I was in complete shock and thought he was crazy! We could never help an animal we knew nothing about. We fed him a milk recipe from the vet for wild rabbits out of a syringe and he took it really well and started growing and becoming very affectionate. After a couple weeks of milk we noticed he was eating our cat and dog food along with the fresh picked leaves and fruit we were giving him and was rapidly growing. To cut this story short Spike is about 20 LBS. now. With his love for people and other animals and not knowing how to climb trees he has become unreleasable. Porcupines have become a very big part of our family and Spike attends elementary schools to teach kids a little about the softer side of a porcupine. |
